Ìmọ̀, ọran, òmòràn, ogbón, oye, and iriri

Course description

How can we define information, knowledge, wisdom, experience, thoughts, and cognitive capacities? Are there any differences between them? We try to find them, but in the end, we discover the spider web concept. Everything is connected, and nothing is more or less important.

Ìmọ̀ means information. Mọ is to know, and ìmọ̀ is the art of knowing or the ability to know. Why is it so important to possess real, accurate, useful, authentic, and reliable information? For information to have all these qualities, it is not only information itself that counts; the one transmitting information has to be on the same level. Information concerns our vision, senses, perception, understanding, and hearing. Anyone can become knowledgeable; knowledge and intelligence are not privileges or unattainable qualities. They are, in fact, blessings, but we can always broaden our knowledge and increase the amount of information we possess. What is essential is what we do with the information we receive. In order to find a specific piece of information, we need to get an inner call urging us to do so. Ìmọ̀ is information that is understood; otherwise, it is limited to gbọ (i.e. hearing).

Ọran means knowledge, and òmòràn denotes a knowledgeable person. The verb ọran means to possess knowledge, to have an idea, to understand what is what, and to know how to do things. Yoruba grammar is always a reflection of reality – a person who knows how to do something will say “Mọ ṣe.” Someone who heard about something will say “Mọ gbọ.” Knowing how to do something means having complete knowledge of how to achieve the desired result.

Ọgbọ́n means wisdom, and ọlọ́gbọ̀n means a wise person who possesses ọgbọ́n. In order to possess ọgbọ́n, one must first have the ability to acquire knowledge and then use it to determine how to go about doing something. One cannot be wise without possessing these qualities because wisdom is inextricably linked to human thoughts. No one can develop thoughts and visions without information, which may be drawn from experience or attained by delving into culture or religion. A person has to have the capacity to give himself or herself the chance to become wise. The concept of true wisdom does not demand from someone to be infallible. Human beings can be wrong; nobody is immune to mistakes or failures – the Yourba saying that illustrates this reality goes: “A ṣiṣe ko kan ọgbọ́n.” To make a mistake or be in the wrong has nothing to do with knowledge or wisdom.

Òye means perception, and the term iriri is used to denote actual life experiences.

We also studied how Orí kikun (i.e., stubbornness) can ruin a person's life.

Time and individual genetics in the context of Orí

Course description

Everyone is unique. Everyone’s biological genetics, time, and ire are wholly original. All life is about ire and ibi.

We studied the meaning of ibi as placenta, the metaphorical safe box that houses our ire (good luck) and ibi (bad luck) and manifests our individual genetics through our Orí. Nowadays, doctors draw blood from the placenta to be used for future treatments. In our tradition, there is a long-standing knowledge that negativities are located in the placenta, including the data about all the experiences and illnesses we are bound to face in life. We ritualistically bury the placenta so that bad things stay buried. Not everything in life can be avoided though; otherwise, nobody would ever die. This serves to help us understand how everything is interconnected.

Spiritual anatomy I: Ara

Course description

SPIRITUAL ANATOMY SERIES*

*For Brazilian and Portuguese-speaking audiences, bàbálórìṣà Bàbá King will deliver the “Spiritual Anatomy Series” in Portuguese. Please follow the social media accounts of Centro Cultural Oduduwa for further information about the courses.

Introduction

Spiritual anatomy is the study of physical biology, the meaning of each body part, and non-physical anatomy, which encompasses our spirituality, mentality, mind, sense, reactions, perceptions, and all other aspects of human functioning. How do we function, and in which aspect do we function?

The course aims to understand the spiritual meaning and functioning of each part of the human body, how this determines our place in this universe, and how this influences what happens to us, including in relation to our physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and material health. What are the benefits and importance, and how can all of this wield a positive or negative influence in our lives?

We can see because we are not blind, and we can understand what we see due to our ọpọlọ (i.e. the brain) on the basis of how our senses function. Spiritual anatomy is how we see things. The sentiments we have beyond the mere act of seeing comprise the spiritual anatomical aspect of our lives.

The same applies to the spiritual anatomy of our ẹsẹ̀ (i.e. the feet). Someone can have either ẹsẹ̀ rere (i.e. blessed feet) or ẹsẹ̀ burúkú (i.e. bad feet), and it is through our feet that we can transmit our good or bad luck to the environment and other people.

Our illnesses were pre-determined in our Orí at the point of conception. This is why some people live a hundred years while others survive only for few hours. Therefore, our illnesses are not the consequence of our emotional state – if so, babies would not die; their emotions have not developed yet. Within the concept of spiritual anatomy, we will discuss premature death as something that the Orí initiates.

With regards to human talents, some people are immensely talented because of their physical anatomy; we can observe this in sports, art, and various other aspects of life.

We studied the profound meaning of the saying: “When we are in darkness, our hands will find our mouths.” The lectures are subdivided into sections dedicated to ara, Orí with all of its anatomical parts, and inú.

Spiritual anatomy I: Ara

Ara is the term used to refer to the human body as a whole. The human body is to be understood as sacred, spiritual, and entirely unique because it is made of different anatomies – the physical body functions in parallel with emotions, spirituality, and various manifestations of our genetics. To understand the spiritual anatomy of ara, we need to describe the physical anatomy.

We studied the body's composition in detail along with the ways in which the body commands all of its anatomical parts.

The body is to be perceived as the home of all body parts: arms, legs, head, stomach, neck, liver, knees, and everything else. We studied each part of the body to understand its functions, meanings, and the ways in which it influences our lives. Furthermore, we studied ara as the foundation of our physical and spiritual anatomy and the origin of every single thing in human life, including all physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and material aspects.

From an anatomical perspective, everyone has legs and feet; however, there is a fundamental difference in terms of the quality of one’s life if a person has “good” or “bad” feet or is able to take “good” or “bad” steps. Feet are made to move, and in the physical aspect, everybody walks and moves as long as a person is fit and healthy. However, not everyone is able to move and walk effectively or make positive steps. The ability to hit one’s stride is inextricably linked to the spiritual anatomy. Our positive and negative characteristics are manifested through our bodies, movements, and actions.

We studied the profound meaning of the saying: “When we are in darkness, our hands will find our mouths.” The lectures are subdivided into sections dedicated to ara, Orí with all of its anatomical parts, and inú.

Spiritual anatomy II: Orí

Most of you studied or read about Orí, destiny, pre-destination, cross-destiny, life, and the human concept in general, but we have never studied the anatomical structure of Orí before.

At times, we made a reference to the physical head as a symbol of Orí. We have studied the spiritual anatomy of Orí in depth, but this has not been possible without understanding the physical aspect. The ultimate aim is to delve into the spiritual anatomy, but in order to do that, we need to understand the physical anatomy first.

Orí is composed of the eyes, the ears, the nose, the tongue, the throat, the brain, and the mouth, which are all parts of the head, but what is their meaning? What purpose do they serve beyond the physical one? We studied both anatomical and spiritual aspects and how they determine our destiny and the position we occupy in life.

The terms ojú inú and ojú òde are essential for our understanding of the subject. Ojú òde refers to our eyes, our sight, our ability to see. Ojú inú, on the other hand, refers to how we perceive things, how we understand and comprehend them, how we react, and how we evaluate what we physically see.

Spiritual anatomy III: Inú

Inú refers to the entire section between our waist and neck, the inside of our back, and our chest.

Everybody knows that our heart is essential to us being alive. The same goes for our brain, kidneys, lungs, and liver; we all know how vital they are, but we also need to become aware of the fact that they can help us understand the spiritual anatomy of each body part.

For instance, we can understand how the liver relates to our blood and how we tend to intoxicate our liver based on our emotional state. What do we lose if we are emotionally unstable? What do we lose when we are nervous? We lose job opportunities, money, friends, love, and other positive things.

Òrìṣà Èṣù

Workshop description

The Supreme Being Elédùnmarè created the òrìṣà Èṣù as a guardian of everything that exists in the universe. His responsibility was to make everything functional and to create order in nature and in the human mind. He introduces the fundamental principle of peace and harmony and maintains order among natural powers. Èṣù is always the first òrìṣà to be addressed in every ritual; this is the natural order, and all other òrìṣà are subjected to it. The òrìṣà Èṣù prepares the human Orí to be able to receive the àṣẹ of all the òrìṣà and to use it wisely. Working within the constraints of time and space helps us understand and appreciate life, increasing our self-discipline. We learned how to use the àṣẹ of the òrìṣà Èṣù acquired through initiation in the most effective way, how to prepare an offering, what is the symbolism of an altar, and more.

Module duration: 3 hours

Language: English (with consecutive interpretation into Slovene)

Access: Unlimited access to ÒRÌṢÀ BASICS 1 recording will be available for 3 months after the purchase.

Òrìṣà Orí

Workshop description

The Supreme Being Elédùnmarè created Orí, the regal essence of human beings, a personal divinity who leads and directs human beings from conception to death. Orí references human personalities, temperament, character, behaviour, charisma, intelligence, perception, and wisdom. In a spiritual sense, Orí represents our predestination and destiny. As our personal divinity, Orí is the most important because the manifestation of the àṣẹ of all the òrìṣà depends on it.

We learned how to worship our Orí, how to use the àṣẹ of the òrìṣà to best benefit our Orí, the importance of adequate behaviour, how to make our Orí shine, and more.

This brief workshop is highly recommended for those who are interested in taking the course “Spiritual Anatomy II: Orí” that features an in-depth exploration of the subject.

Language: English (with consecutive interpretation into Slovene)

Access: Unlimited access to ÒRÌṢÀ BASICS 2 recording will be available for 3 months after the purchase.

Òrìṣà Ọbàtàlá

Workshop description

The Supreme Being Elédùnmarè created the òrìṣà Ọbàtàlá as a primeval guardian of purity in the sense of a stable and harmonised mind, creativity, peace, and tranquillity. The creativity of Ọbàtàlá is not just an artistic ability but an ability to understand and adapt to life and relationships, to understand and resolve difficulties, and to keep a neutral attitude. Creativity is considered as having a clear mind and the ability to use it consistently and go about life in a harmonised way.

We studied how to use the àṣẹ of the òrìṣà Ọbàtàlá so that Orí is blessed with the àṣẹ of clarity, peace, and harmony. We learned how to make an offering, use an altar, and more.

Òrìṣà Ifá Ọ̀rùnmilá & initiation

Workshop description

The Supreme Being Elédùnmarè created the òrìṣà Ọ̀rùnmilá with the privilege of knowing the human destiny. Ifá Ọ̀rùnmilá is the òrìṣà of divination, predestination, destiny, and wisdom. The name Ọ̀rùnmilá refers to the òrìṣà, while Ifá stands for the divinity and the divination system he uses. The òrìṣà Ọ̀rùnmilá has the power and the capacity to activate wisdom in human beings; the wisdom of Ifá, if applied, makes the human mind and consciousness clearer.

We studied the importance of initiation, the symbolism of certain ritualistic acts during the initiation process, how we can apply the information received during the initiation in our daily lives, and more.

Price: 50 € excl. VAT

Module duration: 3 hours

Language: English (with consecutive interpretation into Slovene)

Ifá and òrìṣà: How initiations contribute to the quality of our everyday life?

When we get initiated into the òrìṣà Ifá or any other òrìṣà, we understand our lives better. We become more effective in managing our lives and are able to conduct them the way that is necessary, the way we want, and the way that can make them better.

The initiation brings spiritual, emotional, mental, and material independence. We become more self-efficient (i.e. more efficient in managing our own lives) and gain more self-sustainability as it gives us the power to sustain our lives in all possible imaginary aspects.
